Sisal Cleaning Information

Keeping up Appearances

To ensure that natural floorcoverings keep looking good, it's important to maintain a regular cleaning routine.

Using a barrier mat at entrances will reduce the amount of dirt being walked into an area.

As it is easier to remove surface dirt than embedded dirt regularly vacuum your floorcovering with a suction-only vacuum cleaner to collect the debris. Using a machine with beater bars can cause some damage to the fibres on the surface of the floorcovering.

Because of their latex backing, which prevents dust and dirt build-up beneath the floorcovering, our plant fibre products (sisal, paper, jute, seagrass and coir) are fairly easy to maintain and clean.

Any spillages, as with any conventional carpet, should be tackled as quickly as possible, using clean white cloths or kitchen paper to soak up the solution.

Spills and Stains

Cleaning Kit imageThe golden rule with any spill is to tackle it as quickly as possible, whether on a conventional carpet or on a natural floorcovering.

Crucial Trading's Care and Cleaning Box includes a Spot Cleaner specifically developed for natural floorings.

Using Crucial Trading Spot Cleaner:

  • Blot up as much of the moisture from the spill using the cleaning cloth supplied or un-dyed kitchen paper.
  • Spray the spot cleaner onto the cloth.
  • Dab the stain with the cloth, working carefully from the edges towards the centre. Do not rub. Wash and wring out any excess moisture and repeat until all the moisture is completely absorbed and removed from the floorcovering.
  • For stubborn stains on coir, sisal and jute, the spot cleaner can be used with the cleaning brush by spraying onto the bristles and lightly brushing over the affected area. For paper, wrap the cleaning cloth around the brush first.
  • Dab up dissolved dirt using the cleaning cloth then cover spot with cleaning cloth and apply pressure until all moisture is absorbed.

Important Note - never to wet shampoo or wet clean (using hot water extraction machine for example) any natural floorcovering.
